Time waits for no one. Rest on your laurels and someone will pass you. That concern drove Orbea to make the Ordu OME frameset. OME is short for Orbea Monocoque Evolution, shorthand for both the fabrication technique as well as carbon blend. The blend is a mix of higher and lower modulus carbon fiber cloth to maximize performance and value.
Starting with the Ordu Silver as the benchmark, the OME had to be better everywhere. They moved to a BB86 bottom bracket shell, which is wider than the older BB30. The width allows for greater stiffness in the bottom bracket area, which means they were able to set the chain stays wider, flow the downtube wider at the bottom, and have a more massive bottom bracket zone without adding weight. And while aerodynamics are important, and this is faster than its predecessor, they didn’t sacrifice stiffness at the wind tunnel; the bike is stiffer as well. Overall, the frameset is 16% more efficient than its predecessor.
The OME frameset is UCI-legal, which means it is for use both in time trials as well as triathlons. The Cofidis team had this bike for WorldTour time trials in 2015, but it also does double-duty in multi-sport. Knowing that such diversity means great variation in how people want to fit the frame, they designed a 250mm long aero seat post with a sliding clamp that provides 6cm of smooth fore-aft adjustment. For the handlebars, they designed a conventional 1 1/8” steerer tube fork. The narrower size makes it easier to have an aero head tube, and the conventional design means that people can fit just about any road stem to fit their fast and powerful position. The fork legs are aero, just fit within the UCI parameters for length and depth. You mount the brake to the front of the fork crown. A bit less aero, but much easier to adjust and break down for travel.
The bike comes set up with three sets of bottle mounts. One for the down tube, one for the seat tube, and one for the top tube. Riders can choose to use a single aero bottle or two standard bottles for the low mounts, and can put any number of accessories, including a bento box, on the top tube.
The rear dropouts are vertical, meaning fast and easy wheel changes. The rear brake sits atop the seat stays for ease of use. The bike can fit tires up to 25mm in cross section. Wide rims fit just fine.
Orbea has been tweaking their sizing to make sure that they have a frame that fits just about everyone. Each successive frame size has a taller stack and greater reach than the previous. With four sizes, there is one that fits you regardless of whether you’re short or tall, more torso, or more leg.
Reducing drag takes an eye and a wind tunnel to find where it exists, and eliminating it. Orbea runs cables inside the frame for this reason. They call it DCR, Direct Cable Routing, and it is not only faster, but the runs are straight, smooth, low friction, and away from grit and weather. The runs can also be used for either electronic or mechanical shifting. The battery sits under the left chain stay as the seat post and tube are too narrow to fit a battery at the moment.
The frame comes with seat post and headset as well as the stops and grommets for setting up either electronic or mechanical shifting. The front derailleur hanger allows for round chain rings up to 55 teeth and elliptical up to 53 teeth.
The Orbea Ordu OME is fast without pretense.
